CYCAA is thrilled to announce the opening of the nominations for the prestigious titles of 2023 Child and Youth Care Counsellor of the Year and Child and Youth Care Visionary.
We take immense pride in providing this platform to honour and recognize the exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions to the field.

The purpose of this Award Program is twofold:
- To provide much deserved recognition to Child and Youth Care Counsellors who have demonstrated outstanding skills, knowledge, advocacy on behalf of children and youth and dedication to the profession.
- To hold out such role models to inspire others towards outstanding practice and to promote greater public awareness of the important work done by Child and Youth Care Counsellors.
With the CYC Counsellor and CYC Visionary Awards, we honour those professionals who exemplify excellence in the field. Recipients are rewarded for consistently demonstrating their skill, professionalism, dedication and hard work. They truly represent the best of our profession.

The Child and Youth Care Counsellor of the Year Award is intended to recognize the hard work and dedication of our certified front-line staff, supervisors, and managers working in this field. They are a certified individual who has made a significant contribution to the growth and development of children and youth in care.
We often hear that CYC is undervalued and not appreciated yet we rarely take the time to celebrate our own successes and accomplishments. Winners of provincial award(s) are considered for nomination at the national level which is presented every two years during the national CYC conference.
If you work with someone that you feel has made outstanding contributions in the Child and Youth Care field nominate them for the Child and Youth Care Counsellor of the Year Award.
Criteria for Eligibility:
- Must be a current certified member of the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta.
- Must work with children, youth or families.
- Emulates the characteristics, competencies and principles of professional CYC counsellors.
- Must have made significant contributions in the field.

The Child and Youth Care Visionary of the Year Award is intended to honour and offer recognition to members who have made a significant contributions to the growth and development of Alberta’s CYC practice, education, and professional advancement. Recipients of this award would be acknowledged as having clearly expressed and acted on their support to counsellors throughout their professional career, publishing literature and supporting the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta.
If you work with someone that you feel has made outstanding contributions in the Child and Youth Care field nominate them for the Child and Youth Visionary of the Year Award.
Criteria for Eligibility:
- Must be a current certified member of the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta.
- Emulates the characteristics, competencies and principles of professional CYC counsellors.
- Must have made significant contributions to the profession of CYC.

Nomination Operational Procedures
The following information details the operational procedures to be followed each year to ensure that the conferring of CYCAA’s honorary awards is done in an open, transparent and accountable manner.
Nominee Eligibility
All nominees must be members-in-good-standing of CYCAA.
Nominee Ineligibility
The following conditions will constitute ineligibility for nomination for an honorary award:
- Any person currently a member of CYCAA’s Board of Directors;
- Any person currently in receipt of salary, wages, commission, bonus or any form of remuneration from CYCAA;
Nominator Eligibility
All nominators must be members-in-good-standing of CYCAA.
Call for Nominations
The Call for Nominations will be sent to all active members and will be open for at least 21 calendar days.
The Call for Nominations will be widely disseminated utilizing all appropriate CYCAA communications vehicles.
CYCAA keeps all nominations confidential to respect privacy and to avoid disappointment if the nominee is not selected. All nominators and others involved are asked to similarly respect this policy.
Filing of Nomination Documents
Nominations for honorary awards shall be in writing (electronic upload only) and must be received by office administration on or before the specified deadline. The nomination form must be accompanied by all required supporting documentation.
Review of Nominations
The Executive Board is responsible for reviewing each application and selecting an individual as a worthy recipient.
As soon as is reasonably possible following the close of the Call for Nominations, the CYCAA Executive Board will meet to review all nominations.
Where there is more than one eligible and deserving nominee for an award, the board will determine by consensus a single person/organization be recommended for recognition by a ratification vote.
If no suitable nominations are received for any given honour, no award will be conferred.
CYCAA retains the right to refuse any or all nominations at its sole discretion.
The Award Committee’s recommendations shall be forwarded to the Board of Directors for ratification.
Notification of Review
All nominators will be notified as soon as possible of the decision made by the Board of Directors following the ratification vote.
The Executive Board will make an effort to contact successful nominees by telephone whenever possible.
